Description

Soft pretzels are a beloved snack, perfect for any occasion. With an easy homemade recipe, you can enjoy warm, chewy pretzels right from your kitchen. This guide will walk you through every step, ensuring your pretzels turn out delicious every time.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 ½ cups warm water (110°F – 115°F)
  • 1 packet active dry yeast (2 ¼ teaspoons)
  • 1 tablespoon granulated sugar
  • 4 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • ½ cup baking soda (for boiling solution)
  • 1 large egg (for egg wash)
  • Coarse sea salt (for topping)

Instructions

Step 1: Preheat the Oven

Preheat your oven to 425°F (220°C).

Step 2: Prepare the Baking Soda Solution

In a large pot, bring 10 cups of water and 2/3 cup of baking soda to a boil.

Step 3: Make the Dough

In a mixing bowl, combine 4 cups of all-purpose flour, 1 packet of instant yeast, and 1 tablespoon of sugar. Gradually add in 1 1/2 cups of warm water and mix until a dough forms.

Step 4: Knead the Dough

Turn the dough onto a floured surface and knead for about 5 minutes until smooth and elastic.

Step 5: Let the Dough Rise

Place the kneaded dough in a lightly greased bowl, cover it with a towel, and let it rise in a warm place for about 30 minutes or until it doubles in size.

Step 6: Shape the Pretzels

After the dough has risen, punch it down and divide it into 8 equal pieces. Roll each piece into a long rope, then shape it into a pretzel.

Step 7: Boil the Pretzels

Once the baking soda solution is boiling, carefully place each pretzel into the water for about 30 seconds, then remove and drain on a cooling rack.

Step 8: Bake the Pretzels

Place the boiled pretzels on a parchment-lined baking sheet, sprinkle with coarse salt, and bake for 12-15 minutes until golden brown.

Step 9: Cool and Serve

Remove the pretzels from the oven and allow them to cool slightly before serving.

Notes

Note 1: Adjusting the Dough

If the dough is too sticky, add a little more flour until it’s workable but still soft.

Note 2: Toppings Options

Feel free to experiment with toppings, such as garlic powder, cheese, or sesame seeds.
